Aurora Experience was established early 2003 by three Icelandic photographers: Arnold Björnsson, Jóhann Ísberg and Sigurður H. Stefnisson. A few years earlier, or in 1998, they came up with the idea of capturing the motion of the Northern Lights on film. Having photographed the lights for years, Stefnisson for almost two decades, they felt the time was ripe for new challenges.

Up until now it has not been possible to capture the Aurora in high quality and real time. Combined, the three photographers have a vast knowledge and experience in this field and their varying backgrounds came in handy during the developmental stage. Their technical expertise, willingness to push beyond the boundaries of traditional methods and travel down unexplored paths, gave them the extra edge needed to achieve their goal.

Finally, in 2002, after working intensely on the project for thousands of hours, they were rewarded with results that far exceeded even their own expectations. Since then they have been busy gathering breath-taking aurora displays and further advancing their unique technique.

As luck would have it, there have been spectacular solar storms in recent times, one of them the largest in the 30-year history of aurora measurement, and these Icelandic pioneers were there to capture them. Now they have a sizeable archive of aurora material that can be used for various projects.

In 2007 the company was bought by GT Group in Iceland. This includes the right to publish the DVD as well as a huge amount of information, pictures, texts and research material about northern lights. The new owners connected the company to the Elves-, Trolls- and Northern Lights Museum “Icelandic Wonders” (www.icelandicwonders.com) in Stokkseyri. The office now measures 170 square meters and additional there are two conference rooms with a total of 500 square meters.

Aurora Experience will further develop its knowledge about Northern Lights. Also, the company now offers special service for travelers connected to northern lights, short trips as well as longer tours, in cooperation with Guðmundur Tyrfingsson ehf. This is a travel agency and bus company belonging to GT Group and founded in 1969.

Aurora Experience aims to be the world’s leading company in service and information about Northern Lights. The founders of Aurora Experience are still working on special projects for this company, besides new employees  have been joining the team.
